caribbean hook bracelet

I often get questions about my favorite piece of jewelry: my caribbean hook bracelet. I got it in St. John in 2007 when I first visited the USVI. As many of you beachonistas might already know, the bracelet first became popular on St. Croix to celebrate love and good fortune. I also heard that it is an old Danish tradition and that it was first worn by couples who wore the hook towards their hearts when they were together and away when they were apart. Some of the locals told me that if you wear it towards your heart it means you are taken and if you wear it away, then you are open to new love. I am sure there are many other versions, maybe Mimi knows of others?
I love jewelry, mostly silver but I bead every blue moon. I go in spurts. In fact the grey and coral "bracelet" in this pic is really a necklace I made last year. I love the color grey... and coral, need I say more--> la playa!!

Anyway, my bracelet is a very simple design but there are tons of different styles out there. I never take mine off. It reminds me of my times on those islands, sigh.... On my last visit to St. John I saw a ring version of the bracelet and I had to have it! (BTW ignore, the dishpan dry hands please!).
What is your favorite piece or accessory? Is there a little story behind it?

my fav: a handmade silver n aquamarine ring bought for me in iceland, the stone is the color of the fjords, and it reminds me of sweet boys eyes!....

My wedding rings are of course number one (esp because I have a wonderful husband!) but aside from that, I am a big hoop/ dangly earring fan. I also have a silver necklace that has a small buddha and St.Judas Thaddeus medal hanging together, which brings me peace. I love your bracelet, and you have energized me to bead something!

Ah the hook bracelet.... I love those things! I think you aren't officially local unless you own one. Love the ring BTW.

How beautiful. Coral is a wonderful color, so flattering too.

I love the bracelet and matching ring. It also is a great way to not only be fashionable, but remind you of the wonderful time you had. Enjoy! xoxo

Someday I'm going to go back to St. Croix & get those; that was a missed purchase I've always regretted. I'm sure I could order them, but it they wouldn't have that special vibe.

ah yes the hook bracelet. My son has had one every year he has been born. A jewelry staple for all of us here :)I may turn his little baby one's into napkin rings now.

I have one of these rings, though, it looks much older (worn out and in design) than your pretty ones! I just want to say thanks for posting this information. I've had mine since I was very young, from my father, and I never could figure out where it came from (only knew what it meant).
